As the plaintiffs' bar has become increasingly sophisticated, the number of class action lawsuits filed has likewise grown — as have the potential damages. In this high-risk atmosphere, clients can take comfort in the knowledge that Crowell & Moring offers one of the nation's premier class action practices. Our litigators provide effective, sophisticated client representation in complex class actions in federal and state courts nationwide.

Our class action practice couples our broad litigation experience and extensive bench of trial lawyers with our in-depth knowledge of the industries in which our clients do business. Among other successful engagements, we have represented clients in matters involving agriculture, chemicals, coal, defense, health care, insurance, oil and gas, transportation and other key economic sectors.

In the telecommunications arena, Chambers USA has highlighted the firm's "notable" engagement representing a client "in consumer class action litigation throughout the United States, alleging faults in wireless phone or data transmission services." In a series of matters — including In re iPhone 3G Products Liability Litigation, No. 5:09-md-02045 (N.D. Cal.), In re iPhone MMS Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2116 (E.D. La.), and In re iPad Unlimited Data Plan Litigation, Case No. CV 10-2553 (N.D. Cal.) — we have represented a telecommunications company in multidistrict litigation centralizing dozens of putative consumer class actions regarding networks, data plans, and multimedia messaging capabilities of mobile devices.

Other disputes in which we have successfully represented clients involve traditional product liability, torts, discrimination, and other claims, as well as hot-button, emerging issues such as climate change. Our long record of success is a direct result of our commitment to providing clients with cross-disciplinary, coordinated counsel. We regularly draw on the skills and experience of lawyers from all of the firm's major practice areas — from our highly regarded antitrust team to our securities, labor and employment, and other groups — in defending class actions. We are also experienced on the plaintiffs' side of class actions, representing opt-out claimants and named plaintiffs in pursuit of individual and class-wide relief.

We serve as coordinating counsel for national and multidistrict litigation and have significant experience in the rules, procedures, and strategies involved in coordinating complex cases, including those of the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation. We have developed and draw on a range of litigation coordination techniques designed to leverage favorable substantive rulings across jurisdictions and minimize duplicative discovery and litigation expense. Crowell & Moring's lawyers are also involved in advisory committee efforts to reform Rule 23, and lecture frequently on class action developments.
