Ethan W. Simonowitz is an associate in the Litigation Group in Crowell & Moring's San Francisco office. His practice focuses on commercial and intellectual property litigation, with an emphasis on trade secrets and licensing disputes. Specifically, Ethan’s practice has centered on patent and licensing litigation related to biopharmaceuticals and medical devices. Ethan has represented a wide range of clients, including academic institutions, financial entities, insurers, and reinsurers in state and federal litigations. 

Representative Engagements:

  • Represented a major medical school in litigation involving breach of a patent license agreement.
  • Represented a global biopharmaceutical company in an infringement suit involving seven stem-cell related patents.
  • Represented a biopharmaceutical company in a dispute involving breach of contract and misappropriation of trade secrets.
  • Represented a petrochemical trading company in contract dispute involving delivery of biodiesel fuel.
  • Represented a marketing and communications firm in a dispute regarding misappropriation of trade secrets.

Ethan has developed a robust pro bono practice and was the recipient of the firm’s 2014 George Bailey Award. His pro bono experience includes cases in both federal and state court involving human trafficking, immigration, property rights, housing, and criminal sentencing. Ethan has prepared an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of a nonprofit organization in support of the United States' position that ownership of certain lands reverted back to the federal government after the cessation of rail services. He has represented clients seeking asylum on political as well as gender-identity grounds. Ethan has litigated a matter in New York Housing Court concerning allegations of nuisance and unauthorized pet ownership.  He has also represented and successfully settled a matter involving human trafficking claims brought against foreign government officials, for which he and his team were recognized by the Legal Aid Society.

Ethan received his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he served as an executive editor of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review and a legal writing instructor. Ethan earned a M.A. in Latin American history from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a B.A., summa cum laude, in history and Latino studies from Cornell University.
