John Macleod

Retired Partner


John Macleod is a retired founding partner of Crowell & Moring. He served as chairman of the firm on various occasions, including from 2000 to 2006, and he is also a past chair of the firm's Environment & Natural Resources Group. John continues to assist firm leadership in strategic growth initiatives.

John represented clients in a variety of environmental and commercial matters, with a particularized focus during the last decade on endangered species and clean water issues. He argued the landmark Sweet Home case in the United States Supreme Court, and represented developers, water providers, and agriculture, timber and mining interests throughout the country in litigating and arbitrating environmental disputes. John also had significant experience arbitrating and mediating commercial disputes and disputes involving law firms and lawyers. He was a member of CPR's Washington, D.C. Panel of Distinguished Neutral Arbitrators. He was also active in law firm management, both at his own firm and as an advisor to others.

John obtained his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Notre Dame and served as editor-in-chief of the Notre Dame Law Review. He has been a Trustee of the Energy and Mineral Law Foundation since its creation and is a past recipient of the National Mining Association's prestigious "Distinguished Mining Lawyer" award. He is listed in Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in American Law.
