Rachel A. Jankowski litigates cases involving bankruptcy and complex commercial insurance in Crowell & Moring’s Washington, D.C. office. Her practice focuses on mass tort and asbestos bankruptcy coverage disputes. Rachel also conducts appellate work and has drafted numerous briefs on behalf of insurance trade organizations relating to governmental opioid litigation, COVID-19 business interruptions, and other bodily injury and property damage issues, for federal appellate and state supreme courts.

In mass tort bankruptcies, Rachel serves as counsel for several global insurers, including in the Boy Scouts of America, LTL Management (Johnson and Johnson), Imerys Talc America, Cyprus Mines, and the Remington bankruptcies. Rachel’s mass tort experience includes coverage issues resulting from asbestos, human trafficking, opioids, sexual abuse, and defective products, including football helmets. She has also represented insurers in coverage litigation involving cyber issues.

Rachel has an active pro bono practice, where she devotes her time to helping refugees from Afghanistan file for asylum and serving as guardian ad litem counsel on behalf of children involved in contentious custody disputes.

Before joining the firm, Rachel served as a law clerk for the Honorable Wendy W. Berger in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida and the Honorable James J. Tancredi in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Connecticut. Prior to her clerkships, Rachel worked as claims counsel for the country’s largest title insurance company, making coverage determinations for secured lenders and homeowners and defending the insurer against bad faith lawsuits.

A proud Double Wolverine, Rachel received both her law degree and bachelor’s degree in political science and history from the University of Michigan. While in law school, Rachel worked as an advanced student attorney in the Civil-Criminal Litigation Clinic, securing an acquittal for her client in a criminal assault trial. She also represented survivors of sex and labor trafficking in the Human Trafficking Clinic. During law school, Rachel also interned for Deloitte in its tax and legal services department, advising clients on tax advice and penalty abatement, and spent a summer in London working for a bioethics organization analyzing international stem cell laws.

Rachel serves on the Programming Committee for the University of Michigan Alumni Association, D.C. Chapter and on the Federalist Society’s Young Lawyers Board.
