Jason C. Murray is a litigation partner in Crowell & Moring's Los Angeles office, co-chair of the firm's Antitrust Group, and Los Angeles office head. His practice focuses primarily on antitrust litigation for both plaintiffs and defendants, antitrust counseling, and complex commercial litigation. Jason has tried or arbitrated numerous matters as first chair and has successfully argued before the Ninth Circuit and the California Court of Appeal. He also routinely counsels clients on antitrust compliance issues and represents them before the DOJ and FTC in competition matters.

Jason has handled a wide variety of litigation and antitrust counseling, with a particular emphasis on antitrust cartel litigation and monopolization and exclusive dealing cases for companies in the health care, technology, entertainment, and telecommunications areas, among others.

Jason also helps lead the firm's California Antitrust practice, which has been consistently selected by Global Competition Review as a " Recommended" competition practice. It is also recognized by Chambers USA as a leading California Antitrust practice.

In 2018 and 2019, Jason was named one of the top lawyers in the antitrust field by Chambers USA. He has also consistently been selected a "Southern California Super Lawyer" in Antitrust Litigation (2007 and 2009-2018). He is an active member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association's Antitrust Section, and the Antitrust Section of the American Bar Association.

Jason’s deep commitment to public service spans both his adopted home of Venice, California, and his birth country of New Zealand where he serves on the Board of Trustees for a Maori Trust. Closer to home, Jason works on issues of homelessness and job training and recovery services for veterans as a Board Member of the Volunteers of America, Los Angeles, the largest provider of services to LA County's homeless community.

Jason received his B.A. from the University of Nevada Las Vegas and his J.D. from the University of Southern California Law School, where he was an articles editor on the University of Southern California Law Review. He also clerked for the Honorable Charles E. Springer of the Nevada Supreme Court.

  • In re: Resistors Litigation
    Lead litigation defense counsel for manufacturer of resistors in multidistrict litigation brought by putative classes of direct and indirect purchasers alleging Section 1 violation.
  • Prime v. Kaiser
    Lead litigation defense counsel for managed care provider in Section 1 case raising novel Noerr-Pennington and labor exemption issues, brought by hospital chain in the federal district court for the Southern District of California. Obtained dismissal with prejudice of all claims, affirmed on appeal by the Ninth Circuit. 
  • PharmaRx v. GE Healthcare, et al.
    Lead litigation defense counsel for owner of nuclear pharmacies in Section 1 and Section 2 claims brought by putative class of independent pharmacies in federal district court for the Central District of California. Obtained dismissal with prejudice, later affirmed on appeal by the Ninth Circuit.
  • In re: LCD Antitrust Litigation
    Lead plaintiffs' litigation counsel for Motorola Mobility, Inc., Target Corporation, Sears, Inc., ViewSonic Corporation, RadioShack, NewEgg, Rockwell Corporation, and others in opt out lawsuits as part of sprawling multidistrict litigation against alleged cartel in market for TFT-LCD technology used for mobile phones, computers, and televisions.
  • In re: Cathode Ray Tube Antitrust Litigation
    Lead plaintiffs' litigation counsel for Target Corporation and ViewSonic Corporation in opt out lawsuits brought as part of multidistrict cartel litigation and related international arbitration against manufacturers of CRTs used in televisions and computer monitors.
  • In re: Confidential Arbitration of Covenant Not to Compete
    Lead antitrust counsel for major agricultural company in confidential litigation involving covenants not to compete and Capper Volstead immunity.
  • In re: Joint Technology Venture
    Antitrust counsel for major entertainment company in establishing joint venture to develop new distribution technology for high value content.
  • In re: Apple/ATTM Antitrust Litigation
    Lead litigation defense counsel for telecommunications company in Section 1 and 2 litigation over exclusive service provider relationship for iPhones.
  • In re: RFG Patent/Antitrust Litigation
    Obtained federal court approval of cy pres settlement on behalf of major oil company following years of vigorously contested litigation in consolidated federal and related state antitrust class actions alleging misconduct arising from participation in California Air Resources Board rulemaking for low-emissions gasoline (RFG) and its related portfolio of RFG patents.
  • In re: DOJ investigation into Packaged Ice Industry
    Represented manufacturer in all aspects of DOJ criminal investigation and related civil litigation into alleged collusion in the packaged ice industry.
  • Ricoh Corp. v. Katun
    Represented manufacturer in antitrust counterclaim brought by direct competitor alleging monopolization over aftermarket products and services.
  • Coalition for Internet Transparency v. ICANN
    Successfully defeated TRO and PI and obtained dismissal of antitrust claims alleging monopolization and conspiracy in .net and .com registries.
  • FSPA v. Diebold
    Defeated PI and obtained dismissal of antitrust claims brought by third party service providers alleging antitrust claims premised on refusal to license patents and copyrights.
