Mariana Pendás is a dual-qualified lawyer in Spain and New York and admitted to practice under the Brussels E List. At Crowell & Moring, Mariana focuses on international trade, international arbitration, and dispute resolution. She has been named as both a top 50 rising legal star and a top 100 female lawyer in Latin America by Latinvex.

Mariana’s recent experiences include:

  • Assisting clients on compliance with U.S. and EU economic sanctions, Bank Secrecy Act, and anti-money laundering (AML) laws and regulations, export controls, and anti-corruption/anti-bribery laws and regulations.
  • Assisting clients on compliance with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, including participating in internal investigations, conducting witness interviews and factual investigations (including e-discovery).
  • Assisting several U.S. clients regarding exploration of the Cuban market by providing background on the laws of both jurisdictions.
  • Drafting license requests to OFAC and BIS on behalf of U.S. clients.

Additionally, Mariana maintains an active pro bono practice. She is currently assisting a nonprofit on the reconstruction of a cultural heritage site in Cuba. She is also representing several individuals in asylum cases.

Prior to joining Crowell & Moring, Mariana worked in international arbitration and international trade for a well-regarded international law firm in Paris and a well-known Spanish law firm in Madrid. Mariana was a key member of the arbitration practice, where she participated in several arbitrations before the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris and before national arbitral institutions. Mariana has experience in preparing and conducting witness interviews for ICC and national court proceedings.

Mariana graduated cum laude in law from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland and validated her law degree in Spain. She received an LL.M. from the College of Europe, where she focused on EU international trade, WTO law, and EU competition law. Mariana also received an LL.M. in International Business Regulation, Litigation, and Arbitration from the New York University School of Law (NYU).

Mariana is fluent in Spanish, French, and English and has an intermediate knowledge of Italian.
